Mitigation & Forensic Social Work Assessments

Every individual has a story that extends beyond the circumstances of their involvement in the criminal legal system. Drawing on over a decade of experience working alongside criminal defense attorneys, I provide comprehensive, trauma-informed assessments that explore the personal, social, and psychological factors that have shaped an individual's life.

My approach combines clinical expertise with a thorough understanding of the criminal legal system to provide attorneys and courts with a fuller picture of the individual, their circumstances, and their needs. These assessments can inform legal advocacy, sentencing recommendations, and opportunities for rehabilitation and community-based support.

Assessment & Mitigation Services

Mitigation Reports

Comprehensive psychosocial histories that examine an individual's life experiences, including family dynamics, trauma, mental health, education, and environmental factors. These reports provide important context for understanding an individual's circumstances and support attorneys in developing individualized mitigation strategies.

Sentencing Reports

Individualized reports that provide courts with relevant psychosocial information and recommendations for sentencing. When appropriate, these assessments identify alternatives to incarceration, treatment opportunities, and community-based resources that support rehabilitation and successful reintegration.

Social Work Assessments

Clinical and psychosocial assessments that explore the social, emotional, psychological, and environmental factors affecting an individual. These assessments identify strengths, challenges, and support needs and may inform legal advocacy, treatment planning, and reentry services.

A Comprehensive, Trauma-Informed Approach

Each assessment is tailored to the individual and the needs of the legal team. Depending on the scope of the case, my process may include:

  • Comprehensive Interviews: In-depth interviews with clients to understand their personal histories, experiences, challenges, and strengths.

  • Record Review: Careful examination of relevant medical, mental health, educational, correctional, and legal records to develop a comprehensive psychosocial history.

  • Collateral Interviews: Conversations with family members, friends, treatment providers, and other individuals who can offer additional insight into the client's history and circumstances.

  • Individualized Recommendations: Identification of appropriate treatment, supportive services, and community-based resources that may inform legal advocacy and sentencing considerations.

Experience & Impact

Throughout my career, I have collaborated with criminal defense teams on cases involving complex trauma, mental health concerns, substance use, and significant social and systemic challenges. My assessments and mitigation work have supported favorable plea negotiations, access to alternatives to incarceration, and reduced or alternative sentencing outcomes.

I have also been qualified as an expert in forensic social work in New York State Supreme Court and have provided testimony in criminal proceedings. My work is grounded in the belief that understanding the full context of an individual's life is essential to meaningful and effective legal advocacy.
